Anna Elizabeth Klumpke was the first of five daughters and two sons born in San Francisco to John Gerald Klumpke, a German-born Roman Catholic cobbler turned real estate dealer, and Dorothea Mathilda Tolle, a German-speaking Protestant. Anna Elizabeth Klumpke was born in San Franciscoin 1856, the eldest of eight children born to German parents. A series of childhood injuries left Anna permanently lame. When her parents divorced, Anna moved with her mother and sisters to Germany and then subsequently to Paris.
